ANSWER: SIWES means Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

ANSWER: SIWES was established in 1973 by ITF to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in industries by Nigerian graduates of Higher institutions.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF SIWES(INDUSTRIAL TRAINING)?
ANSWER: The Students indusrial work experience scheme ( SIWES ) exposes students of tertiary institution to industry based-skills necessary for a smooth transition from the classroom (theory) to the world of work (practicals). It affords students of higher learning the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling  equipment and machinery  which are usually not available in the schools.

The six (6)-month practical work experience without mincing words is exhaustive. The acquisition of knowledge relevant to the student’s course of study has broaden his horizon and provided the much needed job experience for courses that demands exposure to industrial skills. The program also offered me the opportunity to access the labor market and its intricacies and as such prepared me on how to handle such an issue when it arises.

1.1               OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

The Objective of SIWES includes the following;
·         To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and machineries that may not be available in tertiary institutions.
·         Provides exposure of students to the environment in which they may eventually work, thereby enabling them to see how the future professions are organized in practice.
·         It provides an avenue for students in Nigerian tertiary institutions to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.
·         Enables students to bridge the gap between knowledge acquired in school and the relevant production skills required in work organizations
·         Prepares students to contribute to the productivity of their employers and national development immediately after graduation.
·         To make the transition from the university to the labor market easy for students, and thus enhance students contact for the later job placement.
·         To give room for social and academic interaction with professionals in their field and working environment and also to expose the reality of working places.

The objectives of Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) are:-
·         To provide students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge into real work situations, thereby bridging the gap between school work and real world situation.

·         To make the transition from the Universities to the place of work easier and thus enhancing students contacts for later job placement

1.1    SUMMARY

This technical report covers in its entirety all what I learnt during the compulsory six (6)-month Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as institutionally sponsored and implemented by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF).

The Scheme had made it possible for me to have first-hand knowledge on Ethernet cabling as implemented by Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Headquarters as well as how to troubleshoot basic network issues as experienced in the Corporation.

The Industrial Training has gone through a long way in assisting me on how to put the theoretical knowledge acquired into practice and has really prepared and built me to be resourceful. It has also served as basis for my future profession. Some lessons that were learnt includes:
  • Learnt how to act and behave while on duty 
  •  Learnt how to troubleshoot computer hardware problems, and network problems 
  • Learnt the basics of web design and also how to host a website

3.3 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
Though the SIWES programme was a success there were few problems encountered along the way. Some of which includes:
v Problem of transportation anytime I missed the staff bus.
v When sent to an office to fix a problem, there may be too much complaining by the staff.
v Time wasted when being sent on an errand by my supervisors.
